Lewis Gordon Pugh: Media Campaign Secures Place in History for Explorer, Environmentalist
To increase awareness of the effects of global warming, world-class British endurance swimmer, explorer and environmentalist Lewis Gordon Pugh became the first human to swim at the geographic North Pole. To publicize his effort, Pugh retained Morrissey & Company to conceive and execute an intensive media relations program before, during and after his swim. The program included:
- Securing coverage for Pugh in major national consumer magazines and newspapers.
- Arranging interviews for Pugh on major talk shows and broadcast news outlets.
- Developing a rapport with a select list of government officials responsible for enacting climate change initiatives.
- Organizing press conferences and arranging meetings with prominent politicians and celebrity environmentalists.
This successful campaign helped to seal Pugh’s reputation as an explorer and environmentalist. Coverage was secured with leading media such as Men’s Vogue, ESPN The Magazine, Esquire, Outside and prominent broadcast programs such as “Good Morning America,” “Jay Leno,” FOX News and “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.”
